Vibrant Pop Art – No. 1 Abstract Painting
This Is Not A Love Song is a vibrant and uplifting abstract acrylic painting that references the Coronavirus in the Pop Art style. This Is Not A Love Song was painted in response to COVID-19, and the associated lockdowns that the Australian government used in an attempt to minimise the coronavirus impact. There is a lot of fear and anger in the community and rightly so. The worldwide death count is heartbreaking. This painting has a narrative hidden in the symbols. The circles with spikes represent the coronavirus, the smiley faces represent the people who think the pandemis is a hoax. The different sizes of the circles are a metaphor for different age brackets, and the varying colour hues are representive of nationalities or countries. Finally, the straight lines are a metaphor for flatlines in hospitals. So it is a bleak painting, hence the title: This Is Not A Love Song
I mentioned ‘vibrant and uplifting’ earlier because I used the colours as a metaphor for ‘Hope’, for a light at the end of the tunnel. My intention for this painting is to bring a positive vibe to a difficult time in history. Always look on the bright side of life!
This vibrant pop art styled painting also fits into the abstract genre nicely.
Abstraction: Is not considered an accurate representation of the world around us. Basically, it uses colour, forms and gestural mark-making to convey the artist’s interpretation or vision. Abstraction is used to convey a story or evoke a feeling.
